RE: Invitation to participate in “speaking book” - the oral histories of women working in Timor-Leste at Our Work Our Lives 2011 – Dili

The Working Women's Centre Timor-Leste with the support of the Australian National Network of Working Women's Centres, the University of South Australia and the Queensland University of Technology would like to invite you to nominate for “Speaking Book” - the oral histories of women working in Timor-Leste at the Our Work Our Lives 2011 conference.

“Speaking Book” aims to allow you to tell your story in your mother tounge, in an informal setting to small groups of listeners and to encapsulate the varieties of experience of women working in Timor including:

-Women who work in precarious and/or low status employment
-Women from the districts
-Women with disabilities
-Women with family responsibilities
-Young women
-Women of mature age
-Women who are migrant workers
-Women entering or re-entering the workforce

We would like you to speak about your experience of life and work in Timor-Leste including any challenges you face and how you have worked to overcome them.

Some topics you may like to cover are:

-a description of what you do and have done for work
-work/life balance and family responsibilities including caring for you family members
-successes and challenges in obtaining education and work including any discrimination you may have faced and how you have worked to overcome this
-access to pay and conditions including access to maternity leave and breast feeding leave
-working and living in a conflict and post conflict situation
-any harassment you may have faced including sexual harassment and protection rackets

We want you to feel comfortable about what you are sharing and would like you to feel empowered by the process and support you fully not to disclose any information that you don't want to.

You are welcome to speak in Tetun or English and we will be organising translators.

The conference details are:

Date: 1 and 2 September 2011
Venue: Arbiru Beach Resort, Bebonuk, Dili, Timor-Leste

Speaking Book is scheduled between 4 and 5pm on September 2. We will also be recording Speaking Book either prior to or after the conference and looking to producing a small radio program that will be broadcast in the districts and a you-tube.

If you would like to nominate please contact me at wwctimor@gmail.com or shabnam.hameed@gmail.com or on +670 781 4538.

Yours sincerely
